Syrian British Consortium Meets with Liberal Democrat Representatives

With the valued support and facilitation of Councillor Jonathan Brown of Chichester North and Syrian community advocate Mrs Heba Ajami, the Syrian British Consortium (SBC) delegation, joined by Dr Firas Miro, Member of the SBC General Assembly, held a productive meeting with Monica Harding MP, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for International Development.

The meeting provided an important opportunity to strengthen dialogue on the role of the Syrian community in the United Kingdom and the future of UK–Syria relations. SBC highlighted its ongoing efforts on advocacy and lobbying towards Syria’s stability and recovery, and constructive engagement between the two countries.

Discussions focused on three key priorities:

1. The importance of establishing practical mechanisms to support the implementation of the lifting of sanctions on Syria, particularly by facilitating banking services, financial transactions, investment opportunities, and economic recovery efforts.

2. Strengthening diplomatic engagement between Syria and the United Kingdom, including the restoration of diplomatic and consular services and the reopening of the British Council, in order to better serve citizens, students, and cross-border cooperation.

3. Addressing the situation of Syrians in the UK amid recent changes in UK immigration policy and emphasising the need for fair and transparent pathways to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) for Syrian refugees and Syrian families who have established their lives and contributed to British society.

The Syrian British Consortium remains committed to constructive engagement with UK policymakers in support of Syrian communities and in advancing stability, development, and cooperation between the two countries.

المجلس السوري البريطاني يلتقي ممثلين عن حزب الديمقراطيين الأحرار

بفضل الدعم القيّم من قِبل المستشار جوناثان براون، عضو مجلس بلدية تشيتشستر الشمالية، والناشطة في المجتمع السوري السيدة هبة عجمي، عقد فريق المجلس السوري البريطاني، وبمشاركة الدكتور فراس ميرو، عضو الهيئة العامة للمجلس، اجتماعاً مثمراً مع السيدة مونيكا هاردينغ، عضوة البرلمان البريطاني عن حزب الديمقراطيين الأحرار والمتحدثة الرسمية للحزب لشؤون التنمية الدولية.

شكّل اللقاء فرصة لتعزيز الحوار حول دور الجالية السورية في المملكة المتحدة ومستقبل العلاقات السورية البريطانية، حيث استعرض المجلس السوري البريطاني جهوده في المناصرة والحشد تجاه تعافي واستقرار سوريا وبناء الروابط بين البلدين.

وركّز النقاش على ثلاث ملفات رئيسية:

1. أهمية تفعيل آليات تنفيذية واضحة تدعم تنفيذ رفع العقوبات عن سوريا، لاسيما من خلال تسهيل الخدمات المصرفية و التحويلات المالية و بما يدعم الفرص الاستثمارية و التعافي الاقتصادي.

2. تعزيز العلاقات الدبلوماسية بين سوريا والمملكة المتحدة، بما في ذلك إعادة تفعيل التمثيل الدبلوماسي والخدمات القنصلية وافتتاح المركز الثقافي البريطاني، بما يخدم مصالح المواطنين والطلبة ويسهّل الوصول إلى الخدمات القنصلية الأساسية.

3. مناقشة أوضاع السوريين في المملكة المتحدة في ظل التغييرات الأخيرة المتعلقة بسياسات الهجرة في المملكة المتحدة، والتأكيد على أهمية توفير مسارات عادلة وواضحة لحصول اللاجئين السوريين على الإقامة الدائمة، دعماً للأفراد والأسر الذين أسهموا في المجتمع البريطاني وبدأوا ببناء مستقبلهم فيه.

ويؤكد المجلس السوري البريطاني التزامه بمواصلة الحوار البنّاء مع صناع القرار البريطانيين بما يخدم مصالح السوريين ويعزز الاستقرار والتنمية والتعاون بين البلدين.
