Event: Voices of Syrian Nationals Impacted by the Suspension of Asylum and ILR Processing
On Monday, the Syrian British Counsortium, hosted by MP David Taylor, held an event addressing the suspension of asylum for Syrians. The event coincided with the UK government’s release of its new Syria Country Policy and the announcement of the end of the suspension of asylum for Syrians.
The event was coordinated and organized in collaboration with Asylum Matters, Rethink Rebuild Society, and the Syria Action and Advocacy Group.
During the event, Syrians shared their personal stories and highlighted the deep, often invisible, humanitarian impact these policies have had on their lives.
Key messages highlighted during the event included:
* The urgent need to protect and uphold the right of Syrians to plan and choose their own future, rather than being pushed into poverty and, as a result, forced onto a path of return.
* A shared affirmation that their future is deeply tied to the experiences they have lived in the United Kingdom, and their sincere desire to remain in a safe environment where they can contribute to building both British and Syrian society.
* The necessity for policies to be sensitive to the nature of residency and protection statuses, ensuring that any return to Syria is always:
Voluntary, Dignified, Informed & Never coerced or premature.

خلال الفعالية، شارك عدد من السوريين والسوريات قصصهم الشخصية، مسلطين الضوء على الأثر الإنساني العميق وغير الظاهر لهذه السياسات على حياتهم.
من أبرز الرسائل التي تم التأكيد عليها خلال الفعالية:
* ضرورة صون وحماية حق السوريين في تخطيط واختيار مستقبلهم، وعدم دفعهم قسرًا نحو الفقر والعوز، بما يؤدي فعليًا إلى إجبارهم على مسار العودة.
* التأكيد على أن مستقبل السوريين يرتبط بالتجربة التي خاضوها في المملكة المتحدة، وعلى رغبتهم الصادقة في البقاء في بيئة آمنة تتيح لهم المساهمة في بناء المجتمعين البريطاني والسوري معًا.
* الحاجة إلى أن تكون السياسات المتعلقة بالإقامة حساسة لطبيعة أوضاع السوريين، مع ضمان أن يكون خيار العودة دائمًا:
طوعيًا، محترمًا للكرامة، قائمًا على وعي كامل بالمخاطر والخيارات (Informed)، وبعيدًا عن أي إكراه أو استعجال (Never coerced or premature).
