SBC Attends Panel Discussion on Transparency, Justice and Accountability for Chemical Weapons Use in Syria

Members of the Syrian British Consortium attended a panel discussion organised by the Department of War Studies at King’s College London entitled: “Transparency, Justice and Accountability for Chemical Weapons Use in Syria”

The discussion explored prospects for justice and accountability regarding the chemical weapons file in Syria in light of the evolving political and social context following liberation and the subsequent change in governance. The panel featured a number of Syrian civil society representatives and advocates, including Muna Khaiti and Alaa Younes, who shared valuable perspectives and experiences regarding transitional justice and accountability efforts in Syria and discussed pathways toward justice and redress for victims.

Participants also highlighted the importance of broadening the concept of accountability beyond the direct perpetrators of crimes to include individuals, entities, and commercial actors whose activities may facilitate, support, or contribute to the production of chemical weapons. Such involvement was discussed as a violation of human rights and a contribution to crimes committed against civilians.

مسار العدالة والمحاسبة تجاه جرائم الكيماوي في سوريا

حضر أعضاء من المجلس السوري البريطاني الجلسة النقاشية التي نظمها قسم دراسات الحرب في جامعة كينغز كوليج بلندن بعنوان “الشفافية والعدالة والمساءلة بشأن  استخدام الأسلحة الكيميائية في سوريا” (Transparency, Justice and Accountability for Chemical Weapons Use in Syria)

تناولت الجلسة آفاق العدالة والمساءلة في سوريا فيما يتعلق بملف الأسلحة الكيميائية، في ظل المتغيرات السياسية والسياقية التي شهدتها البلاد بعد مرحلة التحرير وتغير السلطة.وشهدت الجلسة مشاركة شخصسات وناشطات سوريات   -بمافيهن منى خيتي وآلاء يونس- اللواتي قدمن رؤى وتجارب مهمة حول مسارات العدالة الانتقالية والمساءلة في سوريا وناقشوا السبل المؤدية إلى تحقيق العدالة وتقديم التعويضات للضحايا

وسلطت النقاشات الضوء على أهمية توسيع مفهوم المساءلة ليشمل ليس فقط مرتكبي الجرائم بشكل مباشر، بل أيضاً الجهات والأفراد المنخرطين في أنشطة أو معاملات تجارية قد تسهم في تسهيل أو دعم إنتاج الأسلحة الكيميائية، باعتبار ذلك انتهاكاً لحقوق الإنسان ومساهمةً في الجرائم المرتكبة ضد المدنيين
