Statement: Recent Amendments to the UK Asylum Policy

Following the changes announced today by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood regarding asylum laws, Syrian asylum seekers remain stranded awaiting decisions on their claims. Furthermore, many others have been waiting for more than a year for rulings on their applications for permanent residency after their five-year refugee period ended.

It is deeply regrettable that asylum seekers and refugees continue to face increasing restrictions, despite the skills, capabilities, and ongoing contributions they bring to British society.

While Syria has witnessed a major political shift following the fall of the dictatorial regime, thousands of Syrians still lack the basic conditions necessary for return due to the extensive destruction of their cities and the absence of the required infrastructure to accommodate large numbers should they go back.

Syrians today, including asylum seekers and refugees, aspire to build stable lives and contribute more fully to British society, while continuing to support the reconstruction of Syria in various ways.

The Syrian British Consortium stresses the importance of upholding the Human Rights Convention and the necessity of facilitating the lives of Syrian asylum seekers and refugees in the UK and preserving their dignity, by supporting their ability to lead normal lives and plan for their future and the future of their children.

Meaningful participation in building the UK cannot take place under constant uncertainty and instability driven by inhumane policies.

بيان صادر عن المجلس السوري البريطاني

في أعقاب التعديلات التي أعلنتها اليوم وزيرة الداخلية شابانا محمود بشأن قوانين اللجوء، لا يزال السوريون من طالبي اللجوء عالقين بانتظار البت في طلباتهم. فيما ينتظر آخرون منذ أكثر من عام صدور قرارات بشأن طلباتهم للإقامة الدائمة بعد انتهاء فترة خمس سنوات من اقامة اللجوء

من المؤسف للغاية مايواجهه طالبوا اللجوء واللاجئين من قيود متزايدة، رغم المهارات والإمكانات والمساهمات المستمرة التي يقدمونها للمجتمع البريطاني

وعلى الرغم من التحول السياسي الكبير الذي شهدته سوريا بعد سقوط النظام الدكتاتوري، فإن السوريين لا يزالون يفتقرون إلى الحد الأدنى من مقومات الحياة الضرورية للعودة، بسبب الدمار الواسع الذي حل بمدنهم وغياب البنية التحتية اللازمة لاستيعاب أعداد كبيرة في حال عودتهم

يطمح السوريون اليوم، بمن فيهم طالبو اللجوء واللاجئون، إلى بناء حياة مستقرة والمساهمة بشكل أكبر في المجتمع البريطاني، مع الاستمرار في دعم بناء سوريا عبر طرق مختلفة

يؤكد المجلس السوري البريطاني على ضرورة الالتزام باتفاقية حقوق الإنسان، وعلى أهمية تسهيل حياة طالبي اللجوء واللاجئين السوريين في المملكة المتحدة، والحفاظ على كرامتهم، ودعم قدرتهم على ممارسة حياة طبيعية والتخطيط لمستقبلهم ومستقبل أطفالهم

إن المشاركة الفاعلة في بناء المملكة المتحدة لا يمكن أن تتحقق في ظل حالة من عدم اليقين المستمر وعدم الاستقرار الناجم عن سياسات غير إنسانية
