Syrians commemorate the memory of the two Ghoutas Massaceres

The chemical attack on Ghouta was not the first of its kind in Syria, but it was among the deadliest and most devastating.
On that day, 1,144 civilians were killed, including 99 children and 194 women, while approximately 5,935 people were injured, the majority of them civilians.
The victims of that attack account for approximately 80% of all those killed in chemical attacks in Syria, leaving Ghouta as a lasting testament to one of the most horrific tragedies in the history of the Syrian conflict.
Thirteen years on, the survivors and victims’ families continue to bear the weight of their loss, while the consequences of the attack continue to shape the daily lives of survivors and those affected.
On this anniversary, calls are once again being made for 21 August to be recognised as a day of remembrance for the victims of chemical attacks in Syria, with memorialisation accompanied by justice, accountability and reparations for those who continue to suffer the consequences of these attacks to this day.
Remembering is not merely an act of recalling the past, and accountability is not simply a demand for justice. Together, they are essential pillars for preventing the recurrence of such crimes, preserving the memory of the victims, and securing a safer future for Syrians.

لم يكن الهجوم الكيميائي على الغوطة الأول من نوعه في سوريا، لكنه كان من بين الأعنف والأكثر فتكاً.
في ذلك اليوم، قُتل 1144 مدنياً، بينهم 99 طفلاً و194 سيدة، فيما أُصيب نحو 5935 شخصاً غالبيتهم من المدنيين.
يشكّل ضحايا ذلك الهجوم نحو 80% من إجمالي ضحايا الهجمات الكيميائية في سوريا، لتبقى الغوطة شاهدة على واحدة من أكثر المآسي قسوة في تاريخ النزاع السوري.
بعد ثلاثة عشر عاماً، لا تزال عائلات الضحايا تحمل ألمها، ولا تزال آثار الهجوم ممتدة في مفاصل الحياة اليومية للناجين والضحايا.
في هذا اليوم، تتجدد المطالب بأن يكون 21 آب/أغسطس يوماً لتخليد ذكرى ضحايا الهجمات الكيميائية في سوريا، وأن تترافق الذكرى مع العدالة والمحاسبة وجبر الضرر للمتضررين من الآثار التي ما زالت مستمرة حتى اليوم.
فتخليد الذكرى ليس مجرد استحضار للذاكرة والماضي، والمحاسبة ليست مجرد مطلب للعدالة؛ بل هما ركيزتان أساسيتان لمنع تكرار الجريمة، وصون ذاكرة الضحايا، وضمان مستقبل أكثر أمناً للسوريين.
