StatemenT: Condemning Israeli Escalation in Syria

Statement Condemning Israeli Escalation in Syria

11 December 2024

The Syrian British Consortium (SBC) strongly condemns the recent escalation of Israeli military operations in Syria. In the aftermath of the Assad regime’s collapse, which has left Syria in a state of instability, Israel has conducted over 300 airstrikes on Syrian military positions and has moved ground forces into strategic areas such as Mount Hermon.

These actions represent a clear violation of international legal principles surrounding territorial sovereignty and non-use of force, as embodied, for example, in UN Charter Article 2(4) as well as the Israel-Syria Disengagement Agreement of 1974. We recall that pre-emptive self-defence, which Israel seems to be invoking to justify its actions, is not recognised under international law as a lawful use of force. Israel’s aggression risks entrenching a dangerous precedent of unchecked aggression and occupation, undermining the prospects for regional peace and stability.

We urge the UK government to adopt a firm and principled stance on this issue. It is imperative that the UK, as a key global actor, demands an immediate cessation of Israeli hostilities and calls for adherence to international law. Civilian protection and territorial sovereignty and integrity must be upheld, and any actions that violate international law, exacerbate the humanitarian crisis or threaten regional stability must be condemned.

This critical juncture demands decisive action to address violations, stabilise the region, and support the Syrian people in their pursuit of justice, freedom, and dignity.

We call upon the UK and the broader international community to rise to this challenge and reaffirm their commitment to international law and human rights.
