Sema Nassar, an investigator with the Syrian British Consortium’s investigation team, participated in a private workshop titled "Long-Term Accountability for Human Rights Violations in North Korea," organized by the Center for Justice and Accountability (CJA) in collaboration with Ambassador Julie Turner and Ambassador Beth Van Schaack from the U.S. Department of State.
The workshop was held in Seoul, South Korea, on October 10-11, 2024, bringing together a distinguished group of international experts, South Korean government officials, international human rights organizations, and organizations led by North Korean survivors.
The workshop focused on strategies for long-term justice and accountability, drawing on comparative experiences from countries like Argentina, Colombia, and Cambodia. During her participation, Sema Nassar shared insights on the strategies employed by Syrian human rights defenders and survivors working to achieve justice for victims despite ongoing abuses.
She presented perspectives from over a decade of experience in documentation and advocacy, highlighting the challenges of documenting violations within the Syrian context and underscoring the importance of building a comprehensive database to document these crimes to support future judicial processes.
In addition to her presentation, Sema addressed the role of Syrian civil society in sustaining momentum toward justice, despite political and social challenges.
