Happy International Women's Day!
On this occasion, we, in the Syrian British Council, are very proud to have three wonderful women on our Board and we take this opportunity to recall some of what these pioneering women have achieved.
Samera Zeitoun Tayan: As a co-founder of Souriat Across Borders (SAB), Samera, with other Syrian ladies, dedicated her time since the start of the Syrian uprising to support Syrian refugees around the world, especially in Jordan. She was honoured by Women Have Wings for her important role in this area.
Amina Khoulani: Amina is a human rights activist. She was among the
11 women from around the world who were awarded the International Women of Courage Award by the US State Department in 2020. Aminah is a co-founder of Families for Freedom, a group of ladies representing the voices of thousands of Syrian families demanding freedom and justice for their loved ones in Syria’s prisons.
Waad Al-Khateeb is a Syrian journalist, filmmaker, and activist whose documentary, For Sama (2019) was nominated for four BAFTAs at the 73rd British Academy Film Awards, winning Best Documentary and the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature at the 92nd Academy Awards. Her coverage of the Battle for Aleppo won an International Emmy Award for Current Affairs & News for Channel 4 News. Waad was listed on the Times 100 Most Influential People and the BBC Top 100 Women.
Samera, Amina, and Waad have believed in their ability to bring positive change in the world and worked hard to support their society. They share the values of love, peace and justice. The Syrian British Council is so proud to have them among its board members. We are sure that they represent thousands of Syrian ladies who overcame social restrictions and managed, despite all the challenges and obstacles that stood in their way, to stay steadfast and continue the process of giving.
Happy International Women's Day to our wonderful three women, to every Syrian woman and to all the women of the world!
