Dr Yasmine Nahlawi, head of SBC’s Investigations Team, spoke at a virtual event hosted by the Arab Centre Washington DC titled, “Justice and Accountability in Syria: Ten Years After the Caesar Report.” The event, held on 5 December, centred around successes, challenges, and opportunities surrounding the quest for accountability with respect to international crimes committed throughout the Syrian conflict, particularly bearing in mind the Ceasar report which was released in 2014. Yasmine’s contribution centred on international legal advancements that have emerged in direct connection to the Syrian conflict which witnessed the emergence of new mechanisms and interpretations of the law which have expanded the options available to prosecute perpetrators of international crimes.
